Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

To all Science Scouts and their families, we will like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We hope you're set and kicking for the new school term! Don't forget to check back often for news and updates as Troop 3 will be shifting into first gear soon.

Some photos from the 1st Petrosains Science Scouts Jamboree!

The Science Scouts being briefed before they get on to the SkyBridge at Level 42 of the PETRONAS Twin Towers for a special visit.

At the SkyBridge, we're only at the midpoint of the towers so there's a whole lot more to see up as there is down!

Science Scouts getting into their casual wear and forming groups at the KLCC Park for the wet and wild outdoor activity!

It was a beautiful evening, although slightly damp, and there was no one dry when the games were done!

The night festivities began with prize giving and Science Scout Ummeesh took home the first ever "Science Scout of the Year Award!" for his excellent contribution and performance.

The night continued with a chemistry challenge that tickled and excited.

What do you think they're doing?

Science Scouts getting all suited in their smocks as the night is going to turn a whole lot messier!

And the race began! It was a messy, squishy, gummy, icky, slippery race to the finish!

Science Scout Jude should be thankful only his hands are blue!

The Science Scouts observed how to set up their tents with KAT and a volunteer demonstrating the steps.

These guys did it fast!

Everyone's huddled up by their tent in their pajamas for the late night movie, with popcorn!

The next morning, it took awhile for everyone to get up but slowly they did!

We started the next day with our Circle of Energy...

... and Science Scout of the Year Ummeesh led the pledge!

Then we had prize giving for winners. It was a wonderful Jamboree! Look out for the bigger better one in 2009!

Ida, Ain, Yati, Daniel

Activities:
- Circle of Energy:
  • This is an energiser activity to foster team cohesiveness and to encourage bonding.

  • The cake making itself was a learning adventure as this was the first time the Science Scouts had a hand in making their own Batik cake.

A team kicking off the Batik cake making process with condensed milk being poured into a bowl.

Science Scout Adam hard at work stirring in the biscuits while his teammates look on, assist, and eat the biscuits themselves!

The Science Scouts facilitators helping the kids cook up the Batik cake before the press and cool.

Science Scouts Jasraj and Pavi could not wait for their cakes to cool so they ended up licking the spoons clean.

- Identify that Gem:
  • The Science Scouts were given a variety of gems and minerals.
  • By using a worksheet with given materials, the Science Scouts were tasked to identify the gem/mineral type.

Using the worksheets, the Science Scouts attempt to identify the gems and minerals they have.

Science Scouts Azhary fascinated with how his minerals reacted to vinegar.

- Crystal Candy:
  • The Science Scouts were then introduced to crystals and their use and applications.
  • They were shown a variety of crystals including common ones we have at home, like salt and sugar.
  • The Science Scouts then started making their own rock candy although the results will be evident only in a week or two.

2008 Science Scouts Family Day

The Petrosains Science Scouts Family Day 2008 saw Science Scouts bringing over their families and friends for a morning excursion to the centre. The visit kicked off with a full-visit experience starting at the Dark Ride!

After the visit to the centre, Science Scouts and guests were treated to a simple spread of light meals and refreshments in Metre City. A photo slideshow of the Science Scouts in action is also shown.

The Science Scouts and guests enjoying the food and beverages while watching the meetings slideshow.

Parents and guardians also had the opportunity to meet with the facilitators and have a casual discussion on the program, their children, and of anything that interests them and the Science Scouts. In attendance were Daniel, Ash and Ain. Yati was absent.

Sabrina, mom to Science Scouts Adrian and Joyce having a conversation with Daniel.

Everyone who attended the Family Day were also treated to a special series of Mini Shows facilitated by Fiz and Nuyun. These are new short science activities never before done in the centre!

Science Scouts and guests enthralled with Nuyun's demonstration of a science activity.

Painting with salts? That's exactly what the Science Scouts and their guests are doing in this Mini Show activity.

The Family Day is a Science Scouts tradition that brings together the Science Scouts and their families with the facilitators as the activity year comes to a close. As with last year, it was a pleasure having everyone around and the Science Scouts were skillful guides to their guests in the centre!

Everyone left a little mark behind on our huge memory banner.

Azni, Ain, Yati, Daniel

Activities:
- Circle of Energy:
  • This is an energiser activity to foster team cohesiveness and to encourage bonding.

- UV Beads:
  • The Science Scouts first learned about the light spectrum, specifically on ultraviolet light. Its implications and use is introduced and talked about, particularly with reference to UV rays from the sun.

  1. Hidden from view: Putting different objects under UV light and see what appears (e.g. money).
  2. UV shields: Experiment with different fabrics and plastics and see whether they are able to protect the beads from UV exposure.
  3. UV protection: Experiment with sunblock with varying SPF's and see how they affect the beads exposure to UV.
  4. UV art: Draw using a variety of highlighter colours and see what happens when they are exposed to UV.

  • After the exploration, Science Scouts included their UV beads in a bracelet that they made with other beads and indirectly crafting their own portable UV detector. This activity also allowed Science Scouts to explore their artistic and creative sides.
