Troop 4: Meeting 16

Troop Leaders: Qila, Azni, Yati, Daniel

Guest Facilitator: Nensi and Abang Kat

Senior Science Scouts: Khavishini, Darshwini, Ummeesh

The Petrosains Science Scouts became mini-chef's as they experienced kitchen-science themed activities. The first activity is to whip up a batch of royal icing and then decorate their own cupcake. Science Scouts learned first-hand the steps needed behind making icing.

Troop 4 then had an exciting time taking part in the interactive 'egg-citing' science show where the Science Scouts discovered how eggs are actually amazing engineering marvels of nature.

Guest facilitator Nensi leading the icing making activity.

Troop 4 listening to the ground rules.

Science Scout Iman with her successfully cracked egg.

Who knew that eggs could be so interesting?

Success! The egg yolk is separated from the whites.

The egg whites are then thoroughly whisked.

Fluffy egg whites when thoroughly whisked stays in the bowl even when held upside down.

New Troop Leader Qila finds a moment to bond.

Icing sugar, vanilla essence, and colouring is then added to the whites and whisked again to get the icing.

Science Scout Adam tenderly lays on the icing on his cupcake.

Icing cupcakes can be a messy affair.

Science Scout Hakim takes an easy route by dunking the cupcake into the bowl of icing.

Deliciously fascinating.

Making is fun but eating it is better!

Jer Kent's final result!

The finished cupcakes are a delight!

Very messy business.

Alex with his bright blue cupcake!

Science Scout Aiman has a complex decorating pattern.

Abang Kat with volunteer Yu Sheng during his Science Show.

Troop 4: Meeting 15

Troop Leaders: Qila, Azni, Ash, Yati

Guest Facilitator: Senior Science Scout Ummeesh

Senior Science Scout and Science Scout of the Year 2008 Ummeesh took up the challenge and facilitated an entire meeting! Ummeesh conducted an activity to build a water wheel using everyday materials such as reusable plastic bottles, cork, wooden skewers, styrofoam and cellophane tape. The water wheel proved to be an excellent demonstration of how energy can be transformed!

Congratulations Ummeesh on an activity well done!

Troop 4: Meeting 13

Troop Leaders: Qila, Azni, Ash, Daniel

Guest Facilitators: Iqbal

Senior Science Scouts: Khavishini, Darshwini, Desmond, Ummeesh, Jer Yeu

Guest facilitator Iqbal is back with a great activity; the 'Propellosaurus'! No, it's not a dinosaur but a wind-propelled vehicle that looks like one. Science Scouts learned about electric circuits and wind propulsion.

Firstly, Science Scouts gathered in groups to listen to Iqbal's introduction to the science behind the 'Propellosaurus'. Science Scouts then began assembling their machines with help from the Troop Leaders and the Senior Science Scouts.

The Science Scouts then proceeded to test their assembled machines. Tweaking and refining is needed to ensure optimal speed and acceleration!

Completed machines were then decorated and then tested. Points were awarded for successful runs!

Coming Soon!

July Challenge Winners!

Liyana and Adam did an amazing job for the July Challenge. Here are their badge-winning submissions!

1. Liyana's Monster Mania

Liyana said:
"In this game, players have to shoot at the toys with a ball. The goal is to knock down the monsters. However, the monsters are attached to the base with rubber bands which allows them to spring back up again. This game is challenging and fun and you can pit your throwing accuracy against your friends and families and together, conquer Monster Mania!".

The Troop Leaders said:
"Nice solid build with good use of old toys. Game is playable although it is quite hard to knock down the monsters! The use of the trains as a base is interesting."

2. Adam's Gloria's Pull-Along Animal Toss-A-Ring

Adam said:
"It's a cool toy! Kids would love to pull along the animal caravan led by 'sexy' gloria. Kids are challenged to toss rings at the three animals in the caravan, the kangaroon, dolphin and cat. Points are awarded for a good toss and points are deducted if it hits Gloria instead. To make it even more challenging, toss while a friend pulls the caravan along!"

The Troop Leaders said:
"Inventive use of old toys! The wheels are particularly creative, with a coaster on the front and bottle cap wheels at the back. A lot of effort has gone into the decoration with the inside of the caravan filled up as well as the use of other knick knacks such as fighter jets."
