Troop 3: Meeting 18: FAMILY DAY

Troop 3 has completed the last meeting of the year! Families and friends were invited to visit Petrosains but more importantly to check out the Troop 3 Science Fair held at Metre City. Eight groups demonstrated different aspects of science and technology in a fun, engaging way using props, illustrations, and experiments!

The Family Day and Science Fair is a showcase of the Science Scouts' year-long learning experience! Troop 3 definitely put on a great show with members being confident, knowledgeable, and ever-willing to share with visitors the demonstrations they have prepared!

Thanks must also be given to Science Scouts from Troops 1 and 2 who came to support and to help! It was a collaborative effort from facilitators, mentors, and Science Scouts from all troops to pull this off together!

With the successful end to Troop 3, what's next will be the 2nd Petrosains Science Scouts Jamboree! Be sure to send in your registration forms ASAP!

Troop 3: Meeting 16

Coordinators: Yati, Ain, Iqbal, Daniel

DIY Hand-Drum:
The Science Scouts, led by facilitator Yati, learned how to make their own hand-drum using everyday materials. The Science Scouts were first briefed on what to do and then in smaller groups, each led by a facilitator, the Science Scouts then constructed their hand-drum.

Construction begins with the frame which can be in any shape! A taut cellophane sheet is then glued on and what's next will be putting the holder and drum-beads in place. The Science Scouts then decorated their own hand-drums.

Science Scouts learned about the physics of sound and how different materials, shapes, and sizes will create hand-drums of varying sounds.

Science Scouts Mimi and Nik Nur Liyana diligently threading the beads for their hand-drums.

Science Scout Adam showing off his uniquely shaped hand-drum with the Petrosains logo!

Science Scouts Pavithiran and Desmond with their own creatively designed hand-drums!

Balloon Cannon:
Facilitator Iqbal then showed the Science Scouts how to make their very own balloon-cannon. The cannon is constructed of sturdy mounting board and launches a balloon projectile for safe, harmless (and science'y) fun!

Science Scouts learned about pressure, especially the building up of air pressure inside the balloon which will determine the force of the projectile's launch.

Science Scout Yen Khing hard-at-work constructing his balloon cannon.

Science Scout Ashvin and Li Xuan working side-by-side on the balloon cannon project.

Science Scout Adam all set to launch his projectile (although where is the balloon?).

The Science Scouts firing their balloon cannons simultaneously!

We're weeks away from the Jamboree!

Science Scouts! Troop 3 has almost completed its programme but before we can celebrate and have fun at the Jamboree, please take note of the following:

  1. Our next meeting is on October 10. This is our last Activity meeting so please do come.

  2. Our final two meetings are very important, and we expect all Science Scouts to be present. On October 24, we will be dividing Troop 3 into smaller groups and each group will work with an assigned facilitator to build a Science Project. This project will be showcased to your families and the public on our last meeting on November 7! More details on this soon too but families, you'll be invited to attend!

  3. If you want to attend the Jamboree, be sure you meet our attendance requirement. 3 Science Scouts from Troop 3 has been removed from our active list because of poor attendance so be sure you attend all the remaining meetings.

There is no monthly challenge for October. Congratulations on the September challenge completers: Pavithiran, Loshene, Mimi, and Nik Nur Liyana!

Troop 3: Meeting 15

Coordinators: Daniel, Ash, Iqbal

Dinotrek 2:
The Science Scouts had fun at Dinotrek 2, the dinosaur exhibition which will be leaving KLCC soon and travel to selected venues in the country. Before it goes, the Science Scouts engaged with the exhibits one last time. Highlights of the exhibition include live-like dinosaur animatronics and immersive interactive experiences like the Dino Dance!

Science Scouts Mimi and Liyana are busy feeding the dinosaurs!

Shoebox Diorama:
The Science Scouts made an interactive and ‘surprising’ diorama, using a shoebox and recycled materials. In groups, Science Scouts assembled a dioramic scene in a shoebox, viewable only from a peep-hole. Interactive elements were included such as mobiles, and moving characters to bring the diorama to life.
