Curtains drawn for 2008

The Petrosains Science Scouts first ever Jamboree was held with a blast on 15-16 November! The team had help from KAT and gang, our safety and logistics support crew as well as our volunteers to ensure a safe, fun, and exciting event!

Look out for photos soon! Also, look out for Troop 3 registrations which will open early December. For Troop 2, don't forget, applications for Troop 3 for existing Science Scouts closes on November 30 so be on time. Check out earlier posts on how to apply.

Are you ready for the Jamboree?!

Science Scouts! The first ever Petrosains Science Scouts Jamboree is on this weekend!

Here's a quick reminder:

- Check in: 12:00pm - 12:30pm on November 15 (Saturday)
- Check out: 9:00am - 9:30am on November 16 (Sunday)

To bring checklist:
  • Science Scouts jacket with badges and tag
  • At least 3 changes of clothing (1 for indoor activities, 1 for outdoor activities, and one for night/sleep)
  • A towel and basic toiletries (e.g. toothbrush)
  • Sleeping bag/comforter/mat or anything else to sleep on (we provide just the tents!)
  • A blanket and a pillow
Note to parents:
  • The jamboree agenda includes an event at the KLCC Park. In the interest of safety, we have First Aid kits on the ready, a minimum staff-scout ratio of 1:6, and Twin Towers security services are informed. Parents must take note though that although much effort has been taken to ensure the safety and security of participants, liability is waived with registration.
  • Valuable items such as handphones and money brought by the Science Scouts are their own responsibility. We provide safekeeping for valuable items but they will not be accessible except during break times.
This event is for active Science Scouts only! Science Scouts who have been de-barred due to incomplete meeting attendance or disciplinary causes will not be able to attend. Science Scouts must always remember the Science Scouts pledge!

Troop 2: Meeting 16

Coordinators:
Ida, Ain, Yati, Daniel

Activities:
- Circle of Energy:
  • This is an energiser activity to foster team cohesiveness and to encourage bonding.

- Rocking Batik Cake:
  • The Science Scouts were introduced to different rock types and how they were formed. Examples are also shown.
  • Then, through making Batik cake, the Science Scouts can see an analogous example of how metamorphic rocks may have formed.
  • The cake making itself was a learning adventure as this was the first time the Science Scouts had a hand in making their own Batik cake.

A team kicking off the Batik cake making process with condensed milk being poured into a bowl.

Science Scout Adam hard at work stirring in the biscuits while his teammates look on, assist, and eat the biscuits themselves!

The Science Scouts facilitators helping the kids cook up the Batik cake before the press and cool.

Science Scouts Jasraj and Pavi could not wait for their cakes to cool so they ended up licking the spoons clean.

- Identify that Gem:
  • The Science Scouts were given a variety of gems and minerals.
  • By using a worksheet with given materials, the Science Scouts were tasked to identify the gem/mineral type.

Using the worksheets, the Science Scouts attempt to identify the gems and minerals they have.

Science Scouts Azhary fascinated with how his minerals reacted to vinegar.

- Crystal Candy:
  • The Science Scouts were then introduced to crystals and their use and applications.
  • They were shown a variety of crystals including common ones we have at home, like salt and sugar.
  • The Science Scouts then started making their own rock candy although the results will be evident only in a week or two.
