Troop 5: Meeting 9 (ALL TROOP)

Troop Leaders: Qila, Azni, Kid, Ying Ying, Daniel

Senior Science Scouts: Amirul, Darshwini, Mimi, Logen, Nik Nur Liyana, Khavishini

BIG NOISE DAY!
And the day was most definitely noisy! Science Scouts from Troops 1 - 5 took part in a series of activities on sound energy:

  • DIY Bagpipes - using paper rolls, rubber glove, and a straw, Science Scouts built a simple sound-device reminiscent of bagpipes (and sounds a little like one too!).
  • Clucking Chicken Cup - a paper cup, string, and some practice and you get a clucking chicken noise machine.
  • Humming Hanger - a wire hanger forms a frame for taut cellophane tape which hums when spun in the air.
  • Noise Makers - Science Scouts explored a table-full of noise makers of all shapes, sizes, and decibels!

The Science Scouts experimented in kitchen science as they boiled, mixed, and concocted various liquids and flavourings to make their own yoghurt.

Applying the science process skill of measurement, sugar is slowly added to the boiling milk.

To finish the yoghurt making process, live cultures are added and all that is required next is time for the bacteria to further ferment and multiply.

The Science Scouts also visited the 'HotSpot' areas in Petrosains that offers visitors opportunities to engage with science experiments and activities in a hands-on and engaging manner. With the current centre-wide theme of 'Energy', held in conjunction with the upcoming Green Lantern movie, the Science Scouts explored diverse science topics including nuclear energy, popcorn making, lasers, fossil fuels, and heat.

Science Scouts learnt about the various kinds of fossil fuels that we use from natural gas to liquid petroleum.

Finally, a surprise birthday cake was brought out for Troop Leader Qila! Many happy returns!
